Solstice Meetup for 16-17 Yr. Olds

When: Tuesdays, 7:00–8:00 p.m. (EST), every other week, starting January 19

What: A Drop-in Session focused on keeping connected to camp and one another. If you just want to hang out, this is the meetup for you. Open to North Star Reach campers and siblings who are 16 and 17 years old. The group is supervised by a minimum of two trained adults.

Who: Facilitated by Jessica Doletzky and Patrick Smith and assisted by experienced program volunteers

Facilitator Bios:

Jessica Doletzky, CCLS, CTRS, is North Star Reach’s Outreach and Family Liaison Specialist. Prior to joining North Star Reach in 2014, she was a Child Life Specialist at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital for nine years, where she worked with pediatric patients and families in the hospital setting.

Patrick Smith, MA, is the Director of Camping at North Star Reach. A 25 year veteran in the camping industry, he is passionate about building community and connectedness.

Our first 2021 Spring Family Camp-At-Home session

Our first 2021 Spring Family Camp-At-Home session (April 30-May 1) is completely full. Don’t worry, though! Registration is still open for our second session (May 21-22), and we invite new and returning camper families to join us for a re-imagined virtual camp experience featuring live camp activities, family games and challenges, and an entirely new camp-in-a-box care package delivered straight to your home. Our weekend camps are general sessions, meaning they are open to any family caring for a child who has a serious medical diagnosis. April is #NationalDonateLife. We have many opportunities to thank the generous donors who have given gifts of time, money and talent to make camp possible. Today, in honor of #NationalPediatricTransplantWeek, we’d like to recognize those who have given the gift of life. Thank you to our friends at @epicraces for hosting the Probility Ann Arbor “Mile-A-Day” Marathon Challenge and selecting North Star Reach as a charity partner. We are honored to be one of the local organizations committed to this cause. Today, all participants are invited to gather on Epic Races Zoom channel to run the .2 together for a total of 26.2 miles, virtually crossing the marathon finish line together. MOOSENESS CHALLENGE: For this week’s challenge, we’re celebrating one of our guiding values at camp: to reach high and go beyond. This core practice applies to our programming, activities, and even our staff, volunteers and campers themselves. We’re always striving to create places for our campers to continue to stretch themselves and provide opportunities of growth to try new things and to learn different skill sets. Of course, in everything we do, it’s always challenge by choice, giving campers the power to choose how they want to participate.

Since we are unable to gather safely just yet, for this week’s challenge, we’re asking you to reflect on your year spent in quarantine. This past year taught us many things as an organization and revealed new areas of growth for us. What did you learn or discover this past year? Were you able to learn or develop a new skill – perhaps something like learning how to a ride a bike, baking or cooking a meal, reading more books or trying a different sport? Continuing with our series of celebrating North St

Continuing with our series of celebrating North Star Reach volunteers, we’re shining a spotlight on another amazing Young Professional Board (YPB) member, Joanna Henry. Before joining the YPB, Joanna started out her camp career with us as a program volunteer in 2017 serving as a cabin counselor and she’s been with us ever since!

We were so happy to have her make the jump over to our YPB, where she could continue to share her talents and gifts to support camp. She loves working on YPB because she appreciates the opportunity to be able to “contribute to camp in a variety of ways and use my creativity to support our campily.” Having program volunteers on our YPB, like Joanna, is incredibly beneficial because they are able to bring the fun, community and traditions of camp to any event, fundraiser, or program that they come up with. To her, camp is a feeling that you “just can’t quite describe” – it’s something that we like to call mooseness. And the best thing about mooseness? Once you discover it, you can continue to share it. Camp’s not only a fun place where new adventures are embarked, but it’s also a place “of extraordinary growth for everyone involved,” Joanna said. Her favorite memories at camp? The quiet in-between moments. She loves the “cabin chats, the walks between activities and the conversations that happen in those spaces.”

MOOSENESS CHALLENGE: April is #NationalMonthofHope and for this week’s challenge, we’re celebrating all moments of hope, big or small. It’s been said that April showers brings May flowers – and many of us are experiencing those showers of rain right now! During this month, the buds are beginning to bloom, the sun is coming around, and the colors are popping up – bringing a bit of hope and joy to our days.

Hope can come in many forms, such as being a positive role model to a sibling, volunteering for one of your favorite organizations (even virtually!), making a meal for a friend or helping with yard work. If there’s one thing we know about hope, it’s that hope is definitely contagious. She loves working on YPB because, as she said, “every time we get together, it’s for camp and for the kids first.” Having program volunteers on our YPB, like Cristina, is incredibly beneficial because they are able to bring the fun and even the wackiness of camp to any event, fundraiser, or program that they come up with. Her favorite part of YPB? The spontaneity, the drive, and the passion that everyone brings. To her, camp is simply home. It’s family and belonging. As she said, camp is a place “where you can feel comfortable with who you are because others are there to support you and lift you up. Camp, to me, is a magical place where I can just be me!”
